A Practice Inspired by My Camera Roll
Recently, I have been learning about the neural pathways in my brain. As I develop routine behaviors in my life, such as driving, my brain responds by strengthening the neural pathways for this activity and eventually the activity becomes automatic. Neural pathways also allow for my thoughts to spin in familiar patterns until I put active effort into changing them. In scrolling through my camera roll, I find that I routinely take pictures of the sunset because pretty skies make me smile :)
Despite my tendency to live in routine, I would like to change some of my habits. I am proud of myself for my recent consistency in working out and intellectually challenging myself through reading and listening to wellness-related topics. However, in the emotional realm, I want to wake up less anxious and show more patience to my husband (of 2 months!😄).
Here’s my challenge to you: Read through each dimension of wellness below, paired with a pretty Texas sunset photo, and notice which dimensions you’re satisfied with and which you’re not so satisfied with.
The Dimensions of Wellness:
Physical Dimension
Taking care of your body.
Intellectual Dimension
Valuing learning and developing skills.
Emotional Dimension
Understanding, valuing, and managing your emotions and feelings. Valuing others’ emotions and feelings.
Social Dimension
Possessing healthy relationships with others. Being involved in the community.
Spiritual Dimension
Finding meaning to your life with or without religion. Being involved in activities related to your religion.
Vocational Dimension
Finding satisfaction and meaning in your work as it is connected to your personal values and goals. Utilizing your skills in a meaningful or rewarding way. Being valued for your skills and knowledge.
If you were to focus on one dimension this week and put some action into improving it, what could this look like for you?
